WWII Muffler Knitting Pattern 1942

During WWII The Red Cross handed out free knitting patterns to encourage knitters to knit warm garments
for soldiers. The Red Cross formed an army of knitters on the home front to knit socks, sweaters, mufflers, and gloves for the military.

I love those old patterns from the war effort! Heh, I see they didnt' want anyone to start a new garment with leftover yarn - wonder why not?

I bet they pooled all the left overs (same lot and color) to make more garments...perhaps they were afraid of too many unfinished garments in the end. I wonder how many garments were made in total?

Awesome, love the history with your post. Nothing like a cause to get people going. Think I'll borrow the pattern.

The New Orleans WWII museum has resurrected this idea in the Knit Your Bit program. Scarves are sent to veterans around the country. Patterns are supplied too though they accept those made with any pattern.

Susan, where did you find that sign? I'd love to share it, particularly with Lauren at Knit Your Bit. Is that okay?
