Home Front Knitting

Knitters were encouraged to knit warm garments for soldiers during times of war. The American Red Cross
furnished knitting patterns and yarn to volunteers.
The Red Cross Museum has some vintage knitting patterns posted at this link.

...and don't forget they used to knit bandages as well ;) My mother and grandmother knitted the bandages out of white cotton. As a child I remember the stories.

I love that poster. I've enjoyed looking at their website more then once. Nice of you to post for folks. Like hakucho, I too was thinking of bandages. A friend used to knit a certain size ace type roll for leprosy patients.

Yes they did and some people still do that. I think it is a good idea. I wish I knew how to knit and crochet.

I had no idea about this! It's a shame that there's not a concerted effort to do all kinds of things for our men and women in the armed forces. Great post!
Happy REDnesday!
